Review : Twittelator for iPad

Twitter is one of those social networking platforms that most people have a love/hate relationship with. Some can’t find the purpose for it, others think it’s just plain stupid, and many think it’s the best thing to come along in ages. Regardless of your stance on the medium, it IS a powerful tool for online communication, be it breaking news, passing along information to those who follow you, or simply keeping up with a company. Because of this there are countless Twitter clients out there, all begging for your attention.

So what does Twittelator for the iPad bring to the table?

I’ve been using Twittelator ($4.99) for the iPad for a while now and I have to admit the app is very well put together. When you open up Twittelator for iPad the first thing you should do is switch to landscape, as this app is easily best viewed outside of portrait mode. Once you have that done you will see the timeline of those you follow on the left side of the screen as well as tabbed options on the bottom. Whenever you click (or tap as it is) on a tweet or profile, Twittelator beautifully animates the option and brings up the information on the right side…leaving your timeline in full view.

I’ve spent most of my time with Twitter on the iPad using TweetDeck and Twitterific. Both great apps, but each has its downfalls. Specifically loading times. For some reason they load slowly, new tweets to the timeline seem to take forever in comparison to Twittelator and each are missing too many key features. For example, with Twittelator photos are embedded directly into your timeline, there is a drafts section for future tweets to wait their turn, users can change the background of the app, and can easily move from item to item, tweet to tweet, and from timeline to profile, or any other section needed. Twittelator supports many different URL shortening services, Instapaper and Read it Later, multiple accounts, channels to find useful tweets on a subject, keyword/location/people searching, access to your Twitter lists, access to the trending topics, and the “everyone” timeline. While you’re playing around with all those features, the best part is your timeline is STILL showing, on the left side, auto-refreshing, keeping you up to date.

My Changed Background

With all that you’d think I’d be done. You’re thinking there can’t be more. But there is. When you’re ready to post, once again Twittelator doesn’t disappoint. Users can add photos from their gallery to the Tweet. Can record audio to insert directly from the iPad app into a post, geotag or insert a map link, find a friend to @mention using a drop-down/search box, and even add icons/emoticons to a post. There is so much you can do it’s almost easy to miss that there is a “fail-safe” for sending your tweet. We’ve all accidentally hit send on a touch screen for one app or another. With Twittelator for iPad you have to slide the send button instead of just tapping it. It takes no more time, but adds the element of “safety” and “assurance” to your sending.

Is Twitterlator for iPad perfect? No, but it comes close! I’d love the ability to customize the toolbar at the bottom. I would much rather have “trends” on the main bar as opposed to in the MORE section. I have better use for them than say…Drafts (which I personally don’t use). By doing this I could also choose what my default on the “right side” of the screen is, as the timeline is already on the left. As it stands now my DM (Direct Messages) sit on the right by default, and I rarely use them…I’d love to change that to a List, or @Mentions. This is something that is available on Twittelator Pro for iPhone, I’d hope it gets brought over to iPad soon.

So should you sink your hard earned 5 bucks into Twittelator for iPad? If you want more options and something a bit unique in the world of Twitter apps, then yes, yes you should. But don’t just take my word for it, check out the video at the Twittelator website: http://stone.com/pad/twittelator/.

Free Bumpers for All as Steve Jobs Defiantly Praises iPhone 4 at Apple Press Conference

Click the image to open in full size.

Taking direct aim at the iPhone 4's infamous Death Grip phenomenon by kicking off the event with "the iPhone 4 antenna song" music video, Steve Jobs took the stage at Apple's press conference this morning from the company's campus in Cupertino and promised to answer our longstanding questions about the iPhone 4's antenna dilemma.

"You know, we're not perfect. We know that, you know that. And phones aren't perfect either," Jobs said, first noting the record sales and popularity of the iPhone 4 in an expected moment of self-congratulation. "But we want to make all of our users happy. If you don't know that about Apple, you don't know Apple. We love making our users happy."

"We've been working on this for just 22 days," Jobs said, suggesting that "Antennagate" caught Apple off guard just as it did everyone else. Citing internal tests (because YouTube clips weren't adequate), Jobs said his company "first learned that this doesn't just happen to the iPhone. Nokia, Motorola and other phones have this issue..." Demonstrating how the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and the Samsung Omnia II similarly lose bars when held improperly, Steve Jobs clearly wanted to make it known that the iPhone 4 isn't alone in the world of Death Grips.

Quote:
"This is life in the smartphone world. Phones aren't perfect. It's a challenge for the whole industry. Every phone has weak spots."
"We had a reporting error," Said Jobs, finally speaking to the algorithm and showing off the elaborate $100 million dollar facility in which the iPhone 4 was tested, re-tested, and tested again. "We screwed up on our algorithm. Some of these other phones may be too generous. Our choice was to put the correct algorithm in. And we did that with the new update. You'll still see a drop as we haven't figured out a way around the laws of physics yet."

Apple's chief went on to note that "just one half of one percent" of iPhone 4 users have actually complained about the Death Grip, implying that the media frenzy surrounding the problem is a bigger problem than the "problem" itself. "In the early days of the iPhone 3GS, return rates were 6%," revealed Jobs. "So for the iPhone 4, you think half the people must be returning their phones with what you read online. Well it's 1.7%, less than a third of the 3GS returns."

Finally admitting (but barely) that all is not perfect, Apple's chief executive indicated that, while Apple believes the iPhone 4 is superior to the 3GS antenna, it actually drops more calls per 100 than the 3GS. "We're being transparent," he said, observing that the exact dropped call data can't be revealed as its within AT&T's discretion to withhold that info from competitors. But... "This is hard data... the iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS. Less than one."

Quote:
"Now when we look at this data, it's hard to escape the conclusion that there is a problem, but that problem is affecting a very small number of users."
So what's the solution, we all collectively ask? Apple's answer: free bumpers for all and iOS 4.0.1, which was released Thursday. "We think this has been so blown out of proportion," Jobs said, verbalizing what his comments implied all along. "It's fun to have a story, but it's not fun on the other side. So here's what we're going to do to make our users happy. The first part is the software update, that fixes the way the bars report and other bugs, that's out now. Second, people said the bumper fixes everything... 'why don't you give everybody a case'? Okay -- we'll give you a free case." Jobs added: "If you got one, we'll give you a refund."

Quote:
"We're going to send you a free case. We can't make enough bumpers. No way we can make enough in the quarter. So we're going to source some cases and give you a choice."
"And if you're not happy, you can bring the phone back. We'll give you a full refund within 30 days. No restocking fee. We want to make everyone happy, and if we can't make you happy we'll give you a full refund."

At the presentation's conclusion, which ended with a hand-holding sort of moment and proclamation of how much Apple loves it users, Jobs revealed that the white iPhone will begin shipping at the end of July. We're guessing Jobs and crew hope the white iPhone 4 will be the biggest Apple story from now on. But my hunch is that we haven't heard the last of the "Death Grip."

New iPhone OS Update in Few Weeks!

NEW YORK (AP) -- Apple Inc. said Friday that it was "stunned" to find that its iPhones have for years been using a "totally wrong" formula to determine how many bars of signal strength they are getting.

Apple said that's the reason behind widespread complaints from users that the latest model, iPhone 4, can show a sudden plunge in signal strength when they hold it in a way that covers a small black strip on one edge of the phone. Users online have jokingly called this the "death grip" for the phone.

That drop seems exaggerated because the phone can wrongly display four or five bars of signal strength when it shouldn't, Apple said.

"Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place," the company said in a letter to users.

Apple launched the iPhone 4 on June 24 in the U.S. and four other countries.

Some outside engineers and users have blamed the iPhone 4's apparent reception problems on the novel design that incorporates its antenna into the case. But the company said that any phone will show reduced reception if held in a way that covers the antenna, usually mounted at the rear and bottom of a phone. It maintains that iPhone 4's wireless performance is better than previous models. And it said the incorrect signal-strength formula existed in the original iPhone, launched in 2007.

Apple, which is based in Cupertino, Calif., said it will fix its signal strength formula to conform to other AT&T phones through a free software update for iPhone models 3G, 3Gs and 4 within a few weeks.

"We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see," Apple said.

Despite recurring complaints about dropped calls and slow data service, particularly in the U.S., the iPhone is a standout success, with each model selling faster than the previous one. Apple said it sold 1.7 million iPhone 4s in its first three days, essentially running out of stock.

AT&T Inc., the exclusive iPhone carrier in the U.S., has faced much of the users' blame for dropped calls and poor wireless performance. Apple apologized to customers Friday "for any anxiety we may have caused."
