Exclusive: Apple's January Announcement Confirmed

Gizmodo/Thomas Palmer

One enthusiast's vision of what an Apple tablet product might look like. Apple still hasn't confirmed the existence of the device, but the company has confirmed a Jan. 26 press conference...

Following a Financial Times report that Apple has scheduled a special media event for January 26th in San Francisco, I've spoken to a source inside Apple who confirmed a "big" event for January.

While nothing official has been handed down from the notoriously tight-lipped company, my source took the Financial Times report one step further by saying this event will focus on the mobility space, meaning we'll see something related to the iPhone/Touch product line.

Could this be the announcement of the mythical Apple tablet we've been hearing so much about? I've already picked it as my favorite gadget of 2009, even though the tablet doesn't officially exist yet.

In 2010, I'm looking forward to the thing, however. It'll be the gadget that finally gets me to sit on the couch and surf the Web. It'll be the gadget that finally gets me to read e-books, thanks to its revolutionary e-ink/LCD/OLED/Smuckers Grape Jelly technology. I plan to be simply blown away by the device.

Joking aside, rumors have been swirling, flying and hovering, the latest indicating that Apple has asked a number of iPhone application developers to revise their programs for a larger screen device by sometime next month.

The upcoming event will reportedly be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts — the site of the company's iPod-centric music events held every year in the fall.

It seems Apple doesn't need a Macworld event to make its announcements after all!

Steve Jobs is Extremely Happly with Apple Tablet

A current senior employee inside Apple has been quoted saying that Steve Jobs is extremely happy with the new tablet, reports the NYTimes.

“I can’t really say anything, but, let’s just say Steve is extremely happy with the new tablet,” said their source.

They've also heard from a recently departed Apple employee that said, “You will be very surprised how you interact with the new tablet.”

A former Apple employee, whose name appears on numerous Apple patents, worked on an Apple tablet five years ago and recently told me when the first version of the tablet was shelved by Steve Jobs, a lot of the technology made it into other devices. He explained that components of these early stage concepts are already out in the marketplace. If you have an iPhone, for example, you’re carrying around a mini version of an early Apple tablet.

Apparently, the barrier to producing earlier versions of the tablet was the lack of software. With the App Store doing so well this clearly will no longer be an issue

Apple to Announce New iPhone June 28-July 2?

Apple may have already booked the Moscone Center for their annual Worldwide Developer's Conference. In previous years, the conference has been used to introduce new iPhone models.

AppleInsider has noticed that The Moscone Center Calendar lists a "Corporate Event" from June 28, 2010 through July 2, 2010 in the Moscone West hall. Previous Apple events have been reserved with the same title.

The original iPhone was released on June 29, 2007 and required an exclusive contract with carrier AT&T. It has since been rumored that this contract with AT&T could expire in 2010. If WWDC 2010 does take place on June 28, 2010, Apple might use the event to announce an additional carrier for the US.
