iPad 2 shipment time jumps to 3-4 weeks at Apple’s online store

The Apple online store opened yesterday with 3-4 day shipping times then it turned to 5-7 days and then to a whole 2-3 weeks. Now the Apple store is quoting 3 weeks to a month before you get your iPad 2. That’s only the time until the shipment happens, you can add a few days to a week before the magical tablet actually drops at your door step.

Apple is yet to report how many iPad 2s they sold on launch day but this 3-4 week shipment time also has to do with some apparent shortages. Yesterday, many customers reported shortages of certain iPad 2 models at Apple retail stores and third party resellers. Analysts are expecting Apple to cross the 600,000 sales mark for iPad 2s this launch weekend.

RUMOUR: DiGi to announce something on 8th March?

We got tipped by @jonrulezz with an image that shows an expectant person with 2 apples inside.

So what can it be? First thing on top of our minds is the iPad 2. Launching it on 8th March is impossible as Apple is only releasing it on 11th March 2011. If it is indeed the iPad 2, it might be an announcement that they are bringing in the iPad 2 for bundling in Malaysia which normally includes the typical Registration of Interest exercise.

Another possibility is that DiGi is doing another promo for the iPhone 4. Special price for 2 units of iPhone 4?

It might be considering DiGi had similar teaser for iPhone 4 launch last September. That time they used 4 apples to represent iPhone 4.

Could it be a hoax altogether? Your guess is as good as ours.

Apple to Unveil the iPad 2 at a Press Event Next Week?

Apple may be planning to unveil the iPad 2 at a press event scheduled for next week, according to MacNotes.de sources.

Our sources from the accessories business told us Apple is planning an event next week where they're going to showcase the iPad 2 as well.

A release date between 2nd and 9th April seems quite likely, sources - not only ours - pointed to a release in early April. The only question is: When will the iPad 2 be presented? One manufacturer of iPad accessoires now told us Apple is planning on holding an event next week.

Rumors suggest the device will be thinner, have an anti-reflective display, gain two cameras, and get a dual core processor and SGX543 graphics.

iPad 2 Launch in 3-4 Weeks, Possibly February 1st.

On his blog today, Kevin Rose claimed on good authority that Apple’s second generation iPad will debut in “3-4 weeks” and will feature a Retina Display in addition to dual cameras. An iPad 2 announcement within a month would not fit Apple’s typical yearly product cycle (for devices of iPad’s class: iPhone, iPod etc.) as the first iPad went on sale early April 2010. The iPad 2 also having a Retina Display seems unlikely as the term “Retina” (in Apple’s case) means the doubling of pixels.

I have it on good authority that Apple will be announcing the iPad 2 in the next “3-4 weeks”, possibly Tuesday February 1st. The iPad 2 will feature a retina display and front/back cameras.

Apple doubling the pixels of the current iPad (1024 x 768) would make the iPad 2 have a screen of a 2048 x 1536 resolution. That resolution seems way too high for Apple to put in a 9.7 inch display while keeping costs down. A higher resolution display does make sense though, and this could be what Rose is referring to. Of course we have heard many rumors about the next iPad including two cameras including some evidence from case leaks and physical iPad 2 mockups.

Leaked Next-Generation iPad Cases Suggest Rear-Facing Camera, SD Card Slot?

A pair of images showing claimed cases for the next-generation iPad have surfaced, with the images and accompanying information suggesting that the device may sport both a rear-facing camera and an SD card slot.



One image comes from Shenzhen MacTop Electronics (via iLounge) and depicts the rear shell of a white case claimed to be for the next-generation iPad. An opening in the top left corner of the case suggests that, if the case design is based on actual knowledge of the product, the next iPad will feature a rear-facing camera.

A front-facing camera has been widely expected to be included in the next-generation iPad as Apple seeks to expand availability of its FaceTime video chat service, but there have been conflicting reports as to whether the company will also include a rear-facing camera.

The case also features an opening on the side in the location of the mute switch and volume rocker on the present model, as well as an opening in the center of the bottom, presumably for the dock connector. A second, larger opening is located to the left of the dock connector, in the present location of the device's speaker.


A second image, posted at Kodawarisan [Google translation], shows a pair of back shells in white and black for cases also claimed to be for the next-generation iPad. As in the other image, these cases show an opening for a rear-facing camera in the top left corner.

Also visible is a hole at the right side of the top edge of the case in the location of the headphone jack on the current model, as well as a side opening in the location of the current mute switch and volume rocker, although the opening appears smaller than would be required for the present layout. While accommodation for the dock connector is not readily visible in this image, the mysterious large opening to the left of the dock is present.

Interestingly, the description accompanying the image makes mention not only of a FaceTime camera but also an SD card slot. It is unknown, however, whether the opening at the bottom left is intended to be for such a slot. The current iPad lacks an SD card slot, with Apple offering a $29 kit providing a pair adapters to allow users to move photos to their iPads via either SD card or USB through the device's dock connector.

iPad 2 production in full-force Q1 2011, parts begin shipping in December

According to a report from Digitimes the production of Apple’s second-generation iPad will go into full-force in Q1 of 2011 for an early 2011 product launch. Apple has already secured three iPad 2 parts suppliers, Ibiden, Tripod Technology and TTM Technologies, and will be adding four more suppliers in February. The report notes that the three named suppliers have received final certification from Apple and will begin shipping limited quantities of any-layer HDI boards next month.

Apple’s next-generation iPad is rumored to gain a front-facing camera for FaceTime video calling, faster chips, more RAM, a mini-USB port, as well as a ‘Smart Bezel’ feature. Apple has even already shot their ads for the next-generation iPad and our report on this indicated that the iPad 2 will feature a form-factor that is similar to the current generation product.

iPad 2 to come in White, looks like oversized iPhone 4?

How you wish the above is true.

Well, judging by the trouble some folks go to in creating the above mock-up concept design of the next generation iPad, that might well turn out to be the actual design once Apple unveils it early next year.

Design-wise it resembles an enlarged iPhone 4 with the same metal band around the edges and the same glass exterior. Additions include a front-facing 3-megapixel camera for FaceTime and an SD card slot for removable storage.

There’s also a mini HDMI output suggesting that you could hook up your iPad 2 to an HD Ready TV – FaceTime on a 32-inch plasma anyone?

7-inch iPad with Retina Display & 128GB onboard?

According to Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities, he believes that Apple will launch a 7-inch iPad with Retina Display & 128GB of onboard storage memory next year.
Brian stated that suppliers contacted during a trip to Taipei indicated that Apple plans to launch a new iPad in the first quarter of the 2011 calendar year. In addition to having a smaller 7-inch size, he also said the device will have a “micro or mini USB” port.

Yahoo Mail goes HTML5 for iPad

Yahoo has introduced an all-new and improved HTML5-optimized version of Yahoo Mail for the iPad, delivering a faster and easier to organise solution when it did.

"If you've used our recently launched HTML5 mobile Web mail for iPhone you'll feel right at home," writes Lee Parry, product manager for Yahoo Mail. "We've kept all the things users love about our new mobile Web mail experience, while also optimizing for the gorgeous large screen of the iPad."

If you’re offline, Yahoo! Mail uses local caching capabilities to help you access and search your messages even without an Internet connection.

The new Yahoo Mail also lets you view rich photo attachments in their full form, or as previews directly in the inbox view. There's a dual-pane view, too.

Search has also been improved. Now you can search using full search, personal folders, or a smart folder of most important contacts.

Photo attachments will also be viewable in their full form or as inbox previews, Yahoo said, and the inbox itself has a dual-pane view.

iPad users can access the improved version of Yahoo Mail using Safari on the iPad at http://mail.yahoo.com.

Comex Demos Frash (Flash) for the iPad [Video]

Comex has ported the Adobe Flash runtime for Android to the iPad.

Frash is a port of the Adobe Flash runtime for Android to the iPhone, using a compatibility layer, by comex ( http://twitter.com/comex ). Frash can currently run most Flash programs natively in the MobileSafari browser. Frash currently only runs on the iPad, but support for other devices (3GS+ only due to technical restrictions) is planned, as well as support for iOS 4.

A release is planned for when Frash is stable. Developers are welcome to join the effort at http://github.com/comex/frash - fork it and send a pull request with your patches

iPad Sales Pass 3 Million

It was bound to happen sometime, but prior to launch no one could have seen this coming. In a press release issued Tuesday, Apple has announced the sale of 3 million iPads in the first 80 days since the device was made available to the public.

This news comes after the device sold its first million in 28 days, and its second million in less than 60. The growth in iPad sales shows no signs of stopping, with Tuesday’s announcement being one that is absolutely astonishing given that it took Apple 74 days to sell only one million first generation iPhones.

According to the press release, which contains a statement from Apple CEO Steve Jobs:

“People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month.”

“Developers have created over 11,000 exciting new apps for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch™ user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. iPad will run almost all of the more than 225,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®.”

“Users can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface. iPad is 0.5 inches thin and weighs just 1.5 pounds—thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook—and delivers up to 10 hours of battery life.*”

With the iPad selling 3 million units in 80 days, the sales growth is accelerating, rather than slowing down. This is a trend that one can only expect to continue when the iPad goes on sale in an additional 9 more countries starting in July.

What Tuesday’s announcement also signals to others in the tablet and e-reader market, Amazon with the Kindle and Barnes and Noble with the Nook (both of which dropped prices on their devices this week), is that Apple’s device appeals to more than simply a niche market as many Apple products do. The iPad is truly a device that has caused a paradigm shift in mobile media consumption which may lead to the death of other devices functioning solely as an e-reader.
