10 Reasons to Buy the iPhone 4S

After introducing the iPhone 4S on Tuesday, Apple was met with an onslaught ofharsh criticism for essentially “not living up to the hype.” Several rumors regarding a completely redesigned handset seemed to set the wrong expectations.

But level-headed folks saw this coming a mile away. The Cupertino company pulled the same thing with the 3GS. Why recreate something brand new every year, when the cell phone business generally revolves around two-year contracts?

But does the fact that the iPhone 4S looks strikingly similar to its predecessor mean that it’s a bad handset? Of course not. In fact, in several categories, Apple’s new smartphone will still rank at the top of its class.

Here’s 10 reasons why you’ll want to buy the iPhone 4S:

1. Performance

Sporting the same A5, dual-core processor found in Apple’s latest tablet, the iPhone 4S is 2x faster than its predecessor. And its graphics processor got an upgrade as well. The new GPU is 7x faster than the chip found in the iPhone 4. These improvements will be most noticeable in resource-intensive apps, and especially in games. Look for developers to start utilizing the A5 to produce games with much better graphics and sharper details.

2. Camera

The iPhone 4S houses a state-of-the art 8MP camera, capable of taking 3264 x 2448 photos. That’s 60% more pixels than the iPhone 4′s camera, and it allows you to print out crystal clear 8×10 photos. Other new features include an improved illumination sensor, which will improve lowlight pictures, and an infrared filter to produce more accurate colors. And with Apple’s new custom ISP (Image Signal Processor), you can go from the homescreen to taking a picture, in 1.1 seconds. Now that’s fast.

3. Video Camera

Although the previous iPhone was capable of capturing HD video, it was limited to just 720 lines of resolution. The iPhone 4S is capable of shooting video in full HD, which is 1080 lines. The video camera also includes pro features like temporal noise reduction, which helps you record video in lowlight situations, and image stabilization to compensate for the shakiness that typically occurs when a camera isn’t mounted on a tripod.

4. Siri

The iPhone 4S will come pre-installed with Siri, your very own digital personal assistant. The responding-voice recognition system uses artificial intelligence and seemingly endless knowledge to answer your questions and help you with multitask. Siri can answer trivial questions, pull up restaurants and movie theaters, and even scribe emails and textmessages for you. The system stands out among other voice command technologies, because it understands plain language and has access to such a large database of information.

5. AirPlay Mirroring

This feature is aimed at folks who already own an Apple TV, but it’s one of the coolest additions in the new iPhone. With AirPlay mirroring, everything you do on your iPhone can be mirrored on your TV set via an Apple TV. That means you can browse the web, type an email, and even play games on the big screen — and it’s all wireless. Even with the iPhone 4S’ new A5 dual core processor, 8MP camera, and the always-ready Siri assistant, the handset still manages to hold on to its predecessor’s amazing battery life. With Apple’s new handset you can talk up to 8 hours on 3G (14 hours on 2G), you can browse the internet for up to 6 hours (9 hours on Wi-Fi), you can watch up to 10 hours of video, and listen to music for a staggering 40 hours straight. And if you’re not a heavy user, the iPhone 4S has a standby time of up to 200 hours.

8. Design

Though a lot of folks were expecting a redesigned smartphone, the iPhone 4S is still a remarkable engineering feat. A year after its introduction, the device continues to be one of the slimmest (if not the slimmest) handsets on the market — even with all of its hardware improvements. The original iPhone 4 was heralded as “beautiful” and “striking,” and the iPhone 4S continues that trend. Though its 3.5″ screen might feel small in the company of other 4″+ devices, it helps keep the new iPhone portable enough to fit comfortably in your pocket.

9. Apps

The App Store doesn’t really need an introduction. Apple was first to strike it big in the mobile apps market, and it’s paid off for the company in dividends. The iOS platform is way ahead of the competition in the third party apps race. Not just in terms of quantity, but quality as well. Apple’s stringent app-approval process keeps out malicious software, and ensures (for the most part) that only quality software makes it into its ecosystem. The iPhone 4S will be able to run all of the App Store’s 500,000+ titles, as well as any new ones that come out that require Apple’s A5 processor.

10. Satisfaction

Apple’s products are synonymous with the phrase “it just works,” and the iPhone is no exception. It’s reliable, rarely (if ever) freezes or crashes, and doesn’t suffer from the fragmentation issues that plague other mobile platforms. Apple makes the hardware, and creates the software, and both work beautifully together to provide a pain-free smartphone experience. The numbers speak for themselves. Several recent reports have found that over 90% of iPhone owners are likely to buy their next handset from Apple. Expect the iPhone 4S to continue the tradition.

iPhone 5 Revealed: Larger Screen, Curved Back, Less Buttons

The image shown to the right is a design document for an iPhone 5 case, sourced to Mobile Fun from a Chinese case manufacturer. Luckily for us, the image shows the iPhone 5 and reveals some of the massive changes that have been made with the latest edition of Apple’s iPhone.

Soon after receiving the first image shown here, we were sent from a different manufacturer a mockup of how another iPhone 5 case would look. This release seems to corroborate many of the features indicated by the first image.

If these images are authentic – and we have every reason to believe that they are – then the iPhone 5 is a radical evolution of the iPhone concept, and a bigger departure from the iPhone 4 than previous case images have shown.

Display

Starting with the front of the phone, we can see that the screen size has been extended considerably, from 3.5 inches to 4, although the overall size of the phone has remained the same. This has been accomplished by shrinking the bezel such that no space is wasted; the display stretches from edge to edge, and the top and bottom bezels have been considerably reduced in size as well.
It’s possible this ties into a patent filed by Apple a few months ago, which suggests that the extra space will be used for on-screen indicators and controls. These indicators could then be hidden, à la Lion’s full screen apps, to maximuse screen space for applications like 1080p video playback.

Form Factor

Another interesting point is the curvature of the iPhone 5. After going with a squared construction on the iPhone 4, Apple seem to have reverted to their curvaceous ways. The iPhone 5′s rear panel curves gently back around its edges, much like the iPhone 3G.
This likely means that the back will be metal, and could serve as a replacement for the iPhone 4′s unique side antennae which seemed revolutionary at the time, but caused so much trouble with call droppage last year.
On the other hand, Apple does have the capability to produce curved glass, after its purchase of a few hundred glass cutting machines, which were said to be too expensive for manufacturers. Curved glass doesn’t appear to be being used on the front display, but could very well make up the back.
The case shown in the design document does include a gap for the Apple logo; this may lend credence to rumours that the logo itself will serve as the iPhone 5′s attenae. This feature isn’t present on the second image however, so it may simply be a design choice between the two case manufacturers rather than a technical requirement.

Controls

Steve Jobs originally intended for the iPhone to be buttonless, but found he couldn’t quite get away with it. It looks like he’s some way closer to that goal with the iPhone 5; the physical home screen button has been replaced with a touch-sensitive ovaloid area which takes up the middle half of the bottom border. This area might be used for unique multi-touch gestures, given its increased size.
Another big difference is the placement of the side buttons; according to the design document these are now placed on the opposite side of the phone. The lock toggle is therefore quite close to the camera, but the volume buttons have moved much further down the phone, sitting just below the halfway point. It’s possible that these, and the lock button on the top, have been changed to be touch-sensitive rather than being physical buttons.

Conclusion

In a lot of ways the iPhone 4 was a mixed success for Apple, with a few design decisions representing a step backwards for the brand. This rethink of the iPhone design looks to combine the best features of the iPhone 4, some touches from iPhones gone past, and a trainload of exciting new developments. The iPhone 5 is rumoured to launch later this year, so soon we’ll see what Apple has wrought.

How to fix a slow or buggy iPhone or iPad

iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad moving at a slow crawl or just feels laggy and buggy and trying to figure out how to get it back up to speed? There are few things that you can do try. Stay with us after the break to find out how to help your iPhone out.

KIll recent apps in your Fast App Switcher. There might be a rogue process eating up memory.
Restart your iPhone (soft or hard reset).
Delete and re-install any apps that repeatedly give you problems.
If you’re jailbroken and have a ton of tweaks running, try removing them and re-adding them one at a time and see if that helps identify any problems.
Update your iPhone to the latest firmware. (Unless you have an iPhone 3G, in which case you might want to stick with iOS 3.1.3)
Restore your iPhone as new. This is a last resort — you will have to reinstall everything on your iPhone after you do this. However, it can sometimes solve problems nothing else can, especially if you previously restored from a buggy or corrupt backup image.

iPhone 5 Details: 3.7-Inch Screen, Home Button with Gesture Area?

Former Engadget editor Joshua Topolsky has revealed possible new information on the upcoming iPhone 5, but that information seems to contradict other recent claims. Topolsky reiterates from his previous Engadget report that the next iPhone is to be completely redesigned, and that it looks more like the iPod touch than the iPhone 4. The new phone will be thinner and have a "teardrop" shape which goes from thick to thin, similar to the MacBook Air.

Meanwhile, the home button will be doing "double duty" as both a button and and a gesture area.

this falls in line with testing weve seen for gestures on the iPad, and our sources say that gestures are definitely coming in a future version of iOS. The home button will likely be enlarged, but not scrapped altogether.

He also details that the screen will occupy nearly the entire front of the phone leaving almost no bezel. This information is consistent with some earlier rumors that suggested an "edge to edge" screen. In addition Apple is said to be doing very "interesting things" with bonded glass technology and even exploring designs where the earpiece and sensors are behind the screen itself.

Topolsky is also hearing that the screen may go up to 3.7 inches while keeping the same resolution. This would keep the DPI within the "Retina" display moniker at 312dpi. Finally, there are some hints that there may be some form of inductive or touch charging but this seems unconfirmed.

Joshua Topolsky is the former editor-in-chief of Engadget and is well connected with his previous rumors being published to Engadget. This information, however, contradicts some previous reports from Reuters which suggest the iPhone 5 will carry a very similar form factor as the iPhone 4. Notably, in the same original Engadget report that detailed the "completely redesigned" iPhone 5, Topolsky/Engadget had previously predicted that the iPad 2 would carry a higher resolution screen and SD card slot, neither of which came true.

How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 4 Using RedSn0w (Windows) [4.3.1]

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 4 on the 4.3.1 firmware using RedSn0w for Windows. The Mac version of this tutorial is here.

Make sure not to update to iOS 4.3.1 if you need an unlock as one is not yet available!

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.3.1 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.

4.3.1 (4 GSM): iPhone3,1_4.3.1_8G4_Restore.ipsw

Extract the RedSn0w zip file into the same folder.

Step Two
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 4.3.1 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

Step Three
Once iTunes has finished updating your iPhone to the desired firmware open the Pwnage folder on your desktop and launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button

Step Five
Select the 4.3.1 firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open.

Step Six
Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

Step Seven
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data

Step Eight
From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like.

Make sure Cydia is selected and click the Next button to continue.

Step Nine
Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Ten
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step Eleven
Your iPhone will now reboot

Step Twelve
RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Step Thirteen
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

Next iPod nano to add camera, retain current form factor?

The fifth-generation iPod nano packed video recording, a widescreen display, and video playback. Apple decided to drop these key features in favor of a smaller-form factor, a Multi-Touch display, an iOS-like user interface, and a belt clip for the current, sixth generation model. Now, according to a purported seventh generation iPod nano part from Apple.pro, Apple may be putting the camera back into their popular music player while still keeping the current model’s size and display.

The image was apparently sent to the site two days ago. The site has been relatively accurate in the past, leaking legitimate images of Verizon iPhone 4 schematics from Foxconn, the mini touch-screen found in the current iPod nano, accurate iPad 2 details, and more. Something to note about Apple’s purported plans for the next iPod nano is the location of the belt clip. With this purported camera hole Apple will most likely need to re-position it or maybe even make it shorter. Also, how would using this super-small device for taking pics and flicks feel?

Next-gen iPhone parts reveal iPhone 4-like design

We are hearing from our connections with sources at Foxconn that the next-generation iPhone will include an iPhone 4-like design, and now we have some more information: parts.
Replace Base helped us get our hands on the dock connector and headphone jack flex. While these parts don’t look all to interesting to the normal eye, we had our friends at the iFixYouri iPhone repair shop take a look at these parts to basically confirm a few things.
First is that, indicative of these parts, the fifth-generation iPhone will have color options: black or white. This isn’t all too surprising – seeing we’re seeing a white iPhone 4 soon – but it’s still worth mentioning for fans of white devices.

Next is the iPhone home button. Some rumors from earlier this year pointed to future iPhones lacking physical home buttons. The dock connector for the iPhone 5 seems to refute all that as the home button connector is present on the piece.

Next is the headphone jack flex: It’s redesigned. Although the redesign of an internal part that the consumer will never see does not seem exciting, the engineering aspect of it certainly does. The connection piece to the iPhone’s motherboard usually sits at the top of the cable but on the next iPhone, it sits on the middle of the cable.

Apple moving the headphone jack flex motherboard connector elsewhere could mean that Apple might be making room for something new in the device. Our speculation ranges from a beefier processor, more storage, a bigger battery, a better camera, a 4G chip, a Gobi CDMA/GSM chip, to NFC. At this point there is no way to tell.
What we do know is..

that the fifth-generation iPhone’s size and shape will be similar – if not exactly same in size – to the iPhone 4 since the parts are the same size. That doesn’t mean Apple won’t pack in a bigger screen (external), an A5 processor, more RAM, and a metal back plate.

iOS 4.3 Untethered Jailbreak To Drop “Before The Next Weekend”

iPhone security expert and hacker Stefan Esser has now provided an ETA for his untethered jailbreak tool for iOS 4.3. According to the updated YouTube description of his video, he is going to release it as soon as next week.

Good morning.
This video demonstrates my iPad 1 running untethered jailbroken iOS 4.3
The jailbreak uses a *UNDISCLOSED* exploit in the iOS Kernel. Installation is similar to previous iOS versions which means you require a bootrom exploit (or something else) to install it in the root partition.
Because there is no public bootrom exploit for the iPad 2 at the moment it will not work for now.
However the jailbreak can be made compatible with all devices that are vulnerable to the limer4in exploit and that are supported by iOS 4.3
Because of several changes in iOS 4.3 in comparison to iOS 4.2.1 the jailbreak is NOT READY yet. That is what the *ALPHA* means. I need some time to check what kernel patches are actually required to work 100%ly.
However I recommend the dev-team or chronic-dev to first release a *tethered* iOS 4.3 so that everyone can test if their nice feature actually work. I guess most people require Mobile Substrate to work and AFAIK it does not work due to ASLR. It would be a waste if Apple kills an untethered jailbreak before Mobile Substrate works.
That said I will release the jailbreak when a) there is no other untether by the time I am finished b) if MobileSubstrate works.
Any report that I wait for iOS 4.3.1 is just a misinterpretation of my words.
I merely think that Apple should release a iOS 4.3.1 soon, because it is in their interest to not wait for several months when everyone knows that there is a remote exploit in MobileSafari that might have leaked during the #PWN2OWN contest.

DO NOT LET YOURSELF GET SCAMMED BY ALL THE OTHERS TRYING TO SELL YOU THIS EXPLOIT. IT WILL NOT LEAVE MY HOUSE BEFORE IT IS FINISHED.
Because so many people are asking for an ETA:
I am pretty sure that the untether will be released before the next weekend. I was using older kernel patches that caused lagging on the jailbroken device. I will change that and then port it to the other devices and release.

iPad 2 shipment time jumps to 3-4 weeks at Apple’s online store

The Apple online store opened yesterday with 3-4 day shipping times then it turned to 5-7 days and then to a whole 2-3 weeks. Now the Apple store is quoting 3 weeks to a month before you get your iPad 2. That’s only the time until the shipment happens, you can add a few days to a week before the magical tablet actually drops at your door step.

Apple is yet to report how many iPad 2s they sold on launch day but this 3-4 week shipment time also has to do with some apparent shortages. Yesterday, many customers reported shortages of certain iPad 2 models at Apple retail stores and third party resellers. Analysts are expecting Apple to cross the 600,000 sales mark for iPad 2s this launch weekend.

RUMOUR: DiGi to announce something on 8th March?

We got tipped by @jonrulezz with an image that shows an expectant person with 2 apples inside.

So what can it be? First thing on top of our minds is the iPad 2. Launching it on 8th March is impossible as Apple is only releasing it on 11th March 2011. If it is indeed the iPad 2, it might be an announcement that they are bringing in the iPad 2 for bundling in Malaysia which normally includes the typical Registration of Interest exercise.

Another possibility is that DiGi is doing another promo for the iPhone 4. Special price for 2 units of iPhone 4?

It might be considering DiGi had similar teaser for iPhone 4 launch last September. That time they used 4 apples to represent iPhone 4.

Could it be a hoax altogether? Your guess is as good as ours.

Preview of iOS 5 at March 2 Event

Apple will reportedly reveal iOS 5 alongside a new A5 iPad 2 with 512MB of RAM at its March 2nd event, according to Engadget sources.

The iPad 2 won't get that SD card slot and Retina Display as previously rumored due to "engineering issues", say sources that have been "dead right" in the past.

That SD card slot and higher resolution display won't make it into the new model (the latter we'd been hearing rumblings about for a little while). What's the cause of the switch? Well our sources weren't crystal clear on the exact reasons, but the gist of what was explained to us centered around vague "engineering issues" which may have forced some changes at the eleventh hour.

Engadget reports that the iPad 2 will be thinner, feature the more powerful A5 CPU, 512MB of RAM, and a camera or two.

It's also almost guaranteed that we'll see the next version of iOS (number 5 in all likelihood, along with its SDK for devs), and an expansion of Apple's cloud services (that part is a little... foggy right now).

Brand New Apple Macbook Pro. Cheaper, More Powerful!

While not all the rumors leading up to the launch were true, many of the last minute leaks were accurate, and Apple still managed to sneak in a few surprises.

Apple launched the new MacBook Pros this morning after much anticipation. For the first time ever, Apple has included Quad Core CPUs into their notebooks. The 15″ and 17″ models offer Quad Core CPUs using the Intel 2.2GHz Quad Core 2720QM and 2.0GHz Quad Core 2630QM. While many applications may not take advantage of all 4 cores, these new Sandy Bridge processors include Intel’s Turbo Boost 2.0, which should increase the speed of the remaining cores when the others are underutilized.

Intel® Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 automatically allows processor cores to run faster than the base operating frequency if it’s operating below power, current, and temperature specification limits.
The maximum Turbo clock speeds for the 2720QM and 2630QM are 3.2GHz and 2.9GHz respectively.

Apple has also introduced a hybrid Thunderbolt/mini Display port on the new MacBook Pros. This represents Intel’s Light Peak technology which is said to offer high speed connections and is expected to replace the need for USB 3.0. We expect to hear more about it this afternoon at Intel’s press conference. From Apple’s PR:

Of course there is also the notion that Apple will bring the design and style from their latest MacBook Airs to the new MacBook Pros. Apple is calling the latest MacBook Air line the “next generation of MacBooks,” so it makes sense that the new Pros will follow the trend.

Apple’s “next generation of notebooks” have fast solid-state storage drives (flash storage) placed right on the motherboard, higher-resolution displays, bigger batteries, thinner and lighter designs, faster graphics, more connectivity options, and speedy processors.

A new report from MacTrust claims to offer new information about improvements in the upcoming MacBook Pros .

All models are said to be between 15-20% lighter, being made of an amorphous alloy Apple purchased that is stronger, lighter, and more scratch resistant. The edges of the device have reportedly been smoothed and a new battery technology is said to provide 20% more battery life. A new display is also being utilized that uses less power. RAM and SSD upgrade price will supposedly be "significantly" lower.

MacBook Pro 13"
The 13" MacBook Pro will reportedly get an upgrade to the Sandy Bridge processor and receive a BTO option that ups the display resolution to 1440x900 in gloss or matte. Battery life is said to be increase from 10 hours to 12 and the weight is said to drop from 4.5 pounds to 3.7.

MacBook Pro 15"
The 15" MacBook Pro will reportedly get an upgrade to the Sandy Bridge processor, get a battery life of 11 hours, and a matte option on the standard resolution display.

This module is said to be gaining a modular bay for the optical drive, which would give users the option to replace the optical drive with a second hard-drive. It may also gain an ExpressCard/34 slot and a third USB port. The weight of the 15" will reportedly decrease from 5.8 pounds to 4.6 pounds.

MacBook Pro 17"
Finally the 17" MacBook Pro will also reportedly receive the Sandy Bridge processor, an 11 hour battery life, a modular optical/HDD storage enclosre, an additional USB port, and an advanced graphics option.

The weight is said to be dropped from 6.6 pounds to 5.3.

Pricing
Base pricing is said to be as follows: $1099 starting for the 13", $1549 for the 15", and $2099 for the 17".

How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 Using Greenpois0n (Windows)

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 using Greenpois0n for Windows. Greenpois0n supports the iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2.1 firmware. Use Limera1n if you want to jailbreak iOS 4.0, iOS 4.0.1, iOS 4.0.2.

Remember: Do not update to iOS 4.2.1 if you need the unlock. Ultrasn0w does not support that baseband yet. The only exception is the iPhone 4. You can update to iOS 4.2.1 without upgrading your baseband by following this tutorial.

Step One
Open your web browser of choice and navigate to http://www.greenpois0n.com. Click the Windows link at the bottom of the screen.

Step Two
When prompted save the download to your desktop

Step Three
Double click the downloaded gp_win_rc5_b2.zip file then drag the greenpois0n.exe file to the desktop. Double greenpois0n.exe from the desktop to launch the application

Step Four
Power off your iPhone then click the large Prepare to Jailbreak (DFU) button

Step Five
You will now be instructed on how to place your iPhone into DFU mode. You can get help with this here.

You will be asked to press and hold the sleep button for 2 seconds.

Continue holding sleep; press and hold home for 10 seconds.

Release sleep button; continue holding home for 15 seconds.

Step Six
Once your iPhone is successfully in DFU mode you may click the Jailbreak button.

Step Seven
Greenpois0n will now jailbreak your device

Step Eight
Click the Quit button once the software application has completed.

You'll notice some verbose mode text scrolling on your device.

Step Nine
After the iPhone restarts you'll notice a new Loader application on your Springboard. Press to launch it.

Step Ten
Press to select Cydia then press the large Install Cydia button that appears.

Step Eleven
Once Cydia has installed successfully you can remove Loader by pressing the Options button then the large red Remove Loader.app button.

Step Twelve
Restart your iPhone then run Cydia. Let it do all the necessary updates then follow our Unlock tutorial if possible for your device.

Apple may be planning to unveil the iPad 2 at a press event scheduled for next week, according to MacNotes.de sources.

Our sources from the accessories business told us Apple is planning an event next week where they're going to showcase the iPad 2 as well.

A release date between 2nd and 9th April seems quite likely, sources - not only ours - pointed to a release in early April. The only question is: When will the iPad 2 be presented? One manufacturer of iPad accessoires now told us Apple is planning on holding an event next week.

Rumors suggest the device will be thinner, have an anti-reflective display, gain two cameras, and get a dual core processor and SGX543 graphics.

White iPhone 4 is Coming. 27 February.

Best Buy's internal inventory system is now listing the white iPhone 4 with a February 27th launch date, according to MacRumors.

We've received information today from a source sharing the above screenshot claimed to be from a Best Buy inventory database showing both 16 GB and 32 GB white iPhone 4 models listed with expected in-stock dates of February 27th. The SKU and model numbers associated with the entries are identical to those previously used by Best Buy when it was taking pre-orders for the white iPhone 4 prior to last summer's launch, pre-orders that were canceled when Apple delayed availability of the white versions.

The white iPhone 4 was also recently discovered in the inventory system of Vodafone Germany.

iPad 2 Launch in 3-4 Weeks, Possibly February 1st.

On his blog today, Kevin Rose claimed on good authority that Apple’s second generation iPad will debut in “3-4 weeks” and will feature a Retina Display in addition to dual cameras. An iPad 2 announcement within a month would not fit Apple’s typical yearly product cycle (for devices of iPad’s class: iPhone, iPod etc.) as the first iPad went on sale early April 2010. The iPad 2 also having a Retina Display seems unlikely as the term “Retina” (in Apple’s case) means the doubling of pixels.

I have it on good authority that Apple will be announcing the iPad 2 in the next “3-4 weeks”, possibly Tuesday February 1st. The iPad 2 will feature a retina display and front/back cameras.

Apple doubling the pixels of the current iPad (1024 x 768) would make the iPad 2 have a screen of a 2048 x 1536 resolution. That resolution seems way too high for Apple to put in a 9.7 inch display while keeping costs down. A higher resolution display does make sense though, and this could be what Rose is referring to. Of course we have heard many rumors about the next iPad including two cameras including some evidence from case leaks and physical iPad 2 mockups.

Apple this morning confirmed it intends opening its Mac App Store on Thursday, January 6.
The store will be available in 90 countries at launch and will feature both paid and free apps in various categories.

Leaked Next-Generation iPad Cases Suggest Rear-Facing Camera, SD Card Slot?

A pair of images showing claimed cases for the next-generation iPad have surfaced, with the images and accompanying information suggesting that the device may sport both a rear-facing camera and an SD card slot.

One image comes from Shenzhen MacTop Electronics (via iLounge) and depicts the rear shell of a white case claimed to be for the next-generation iPad. An opening in the top left corner of the case suggests that, if the case design is based on actual knowledge of the product, the next iPad will feature a rear-facing camera.

A front-facing camera has been widely expected to be included in the next-generation iPad as Apple seeks to expand availability of its FaceTime video chat service, but there have been conflicting reports as to whether the company will also include a rear-facing camera.

The case also features an opening on the side in the location of the mute switch and volume rocker on the present model, as well as an opening in the center of the bottom, presumably for the dock connector. A second, larger opening is located to the left of the dock connector, in the present location of the device's speaker.

A second image, posted at Kodawarisan [Google translation], shows a pair of back shells in white and black for cases also claimed to be for the next-generation iPad. As in the other image, these cases show an opening for a rear-facing camera in the top left corner.

Also visible is a hole at the right side of the top edge of the case in the location of the headphone jack on the current model, as well as a side opening in the location of the current mute switch and volume rocker, although the opening appears smaller than would be required for the present layout. While accommodation for the dock connector is not readily visible in this image, the mysterious large opening to the left of the dock is present.

Interestingly, the description accompanying the image makes mention not only of a FaceTime camera but also an SD card slot. It is unknown, however, whether the opening at the bottom left is intended to be for such a slot. The current iPad lacks an SD card slot, with Apple offering a $29 kit providing a pair adapters to allow users to move photos to their iPads via either SD card or USB through the device's dock connector.

In case you are on of our readers, you may know that Apple is reportedly launching iOS 4.3 next Monday (December 13th). However, an inside source has just told Appletell that Apple is targeting a Monday, December 13th launch of the Mac App Store.

The company apparently told developers to have their software prepared for a launch as early as Monday the 6th of this month, but our contact would be shocked if that happened at this point. Apple has made no official announcements regarding this, and delays could always happen, but there's a push to be launched before Christmas, well ahead of the previously estimated January release.

At the Back to the Mac even on October 20th, Steve Jobs confirmed that the Mac App Store should be launched after 90 days which means late in January 2011 so we can't verify these claims but we do know that Apple has already started asking developers to submit their apps to the Mac App Store and has already seeded a new version of Mac OS X 10.6.6 to Mac App developers. Norman Foster to design Apple’s new campus called ‘Apple City’

Apple has been working secretly with the world-renowned designer of the Hong Kong International Airport on the design of its new campus in Cupertino, according to a business publication in Spain. El Economista [googletrans] profiles "Apple City," which has been designed by Norman Foster - who also worked on the design of all-solar Masdar City in Abu Dhabi - to be at the cutting edge of energy efficiency and sustainability, and will feature a network of tunnels underground instead of roads connecting the buildings.

The design process has reportedly been going on for months, but Apple just bought a disused 98-acre parcel of land from Hewlett-Packard for the new Apple City, right next to 50 acres the company bought back in 2006. The company is outgrowing its current headquarters at One Infinite Loop, Apple spokesman Steve Dowling told the San Jose Mercury News, saying "we now occupy 57 buildings in Cupertino and our campus is bursting at the seams." The acquisition of the new plot of land will allow the project to go forward.

Apple City reportedly takes a lot of elements from the Foster + Partners design of Masdar City, which is being built from the ground up to be carbon-neutral and zero waste, with no cars allowed inside the city walls and personal rapid transit "pods" to take everyone around. Apple City will also be car-free, with all buildings connected by tunnels. In addition to giving employees an easier way around the 146-acre campus, which is split by Pruneridge Avenue and Interstate 280, the tunnels will also eliminate all roads and parking lots on the surface. "The buildings which will house the engineers and R&D will also be multifunctional and will incorporate cutting-edge technology in materials and equipment as well as renewable energy resources," El Economista's report says.

Apple to Launch Newly Designed MacBook Pro in April?

Apple may be planning to launch an all new MacBook Pro in April alongside an update to Final Cut Pro, according to Three Guys and a Podcast.

The new design is thought to follow in the footsteps of the 2010 MacBook Air.

The new MacBook Pros will move to solid state storage, up to 512GB, remove the optical drive, and we believe light-peak is being pushed to make it's first-ever entrance into the market, another Apple exclusive.

In the same manner that the MacBook air did not replace the traditional 13" MacBook Pro, Apple is likely to leave one legacy 15" design in the lineup for those not yet comfortable with Apple's new direction. The traditional model is likely to slot into the $1,799 position with upgrade options available, while the new MacBook Pros will start at $1,999 and scale up according to configuration.

The site also believes Apple will unveil the iPad 2 in January.

iPad 2 production in full-force Q1 2011, parts begin shipping in December

According to a report from Digitimes the production of Apple’s second-generation iPad will go into full-force in Q1 of 2011 for an early 2011 product launch. Apple has already secured three iPad 2 parts suppliers, Ibiden, Tripod Technology and TTM Technologies, and will be adding four more suppliers in February. The report notes that the three named suppliers have received final certification from Apple and will begin shipping limited quantities of any-layer HDI boards next month.

Apple’s next-generation iPad is rumored to gain a front-facing camera for FaceTime video calling, faster chips, more RAM, a mini-USB port, as well as a ‘Smart Bezel’ feature. Apple has even already shot their ads for the next-generation iPad and our report on this indicated that the iPad 2 will feature a form-factor that is similar to the current generation product.

PCs, especially historically, were compared based on technical specs. An awful lot of PCs have been sold to people who never even looked at the enclosure — only the specs. That’s not how the game is played in consumer electronics. Nobody knows what kind of CPU they have in their phones. (Where by “nobody”, I mean “no regular people”.) Apple doesn’t even publish CPU specs for iOS devices, nor publish how much RAM they contain.

With computers, again, it’s fair to say that the typical Mac costs more than the typical Windows PC. That’s not true for mobile devices, which means Apple gets to compete mostly on factors like design, user experience, and branding. In short, the nascent mobile computing market has much more in common with the traditional consumer electronics market than it does with the PC industry, and that works very much in Apple’s favor.

iPhone 5 to Feature NFC Capabilities for Remote Computing?

Apple's next iPhone may feature Near Field Communication technology for remote computing, according to a CultofMac source.

The idea is that if you wave your NFC equipped iPhone at an NFC Mac, the computer will load all your applications, settings, and data. This will let you work at the computer as if it was your own. Then when you move out of range the machine will return to its previous state.

Here's how CultofMac's source describes it:

"The Mac authenticates with the iPhone, which contains a lot of the information the computer needs, such as bookmarks, passwords and other data," said our source, who asked to remain anonymous. "The system would essentially turn any Apple computer into your own — like you’re actually working on your own computer. Same settings, look, bookmarks, preferences. It would all be invisible. Your iPhone would be all you needed to unlock your Mac."

"Address book would show their contacts, and the user would have full access to their information in the same manner they would if they were working from home. This same behavior extends to even showing the same desktop picture, mouse and keyboard settings, and would eventually extend to software licenses and passwords for websites such as Facebook."

"When a person walks away with their iPhone and away from the communication link with the Mac, the original settings of the Mac would be restored. All communications and storage of passwords stays on the user’s iPhone, leaving nothing stored on the computer. This functionality is extended to access a user’s home folder, which will be stored and accessed either through storage on MobileMe or by using the Back to My Mac feature to connect to the user’s home folder."

Apple calls the new MacBook Air "the next generation of MacBooks," in an indication that they are planning on incorporating the innovative features of the refreshed model in all Apple laptops. Chief among these is the solid-state drive (SSD) flash storage that replaces the hard drive, cutting weight and extending battery life. Apple has telegraphed in a number of ways that the 'instant-on' capability of the MacBook Air and iPad will become standard on MacBooks - if not on all Macs - in the future.

"All notebooks will be like this someday," Jobs said on the stage yesterday, calling the MacBook Air "the future of the MacBook." In the press release accompanying the Air launch, Apple strongly asserted that "the first of a next generation of notebooks which will replace mechanical hard disks and optical drives with Internet services and solid state flash storage." So it's clear that they intend to standardize on flash storage as opposed to mechanical hard disks. Apple is already the largest buyer of NAND flash memory in the world, snapping up so many of the silicon wafers that it's single handedly caused worldwide shortages time and time again. However, their purchasing power has also enabled them to get flash at a good price, and further driving the price down by forcing manufacturers to increase production.

So is this a good development for the future of the MacBook, as well as the notebook industry in general? For one thing, the lack of moving parts eliminates the number one killer of hard drives: head crashes. Also, start-up time and access time is faster in solid state memory than in mechanical hard drives, again because of no moving parts. Heat buildup is limited and power usage is much lower. On the downside, the high price makes storage larger than the 256GB in the 13-inch Air impractical, though as production ramps up we should see prices come down. One major drawback is that there are a limited number of write cycles with flash memory; mechanical hard drives can be rewritten as many as ten times more than flash chips.

Technical and price shortcomings will doubtlessly diminish over time, and for a user who needs a light, medium-duty laptop - and has money to spare - the current crop of MacBook Airs are a fine choice. For those who are looking for a more affordable, durable option and are not rabid early adopters, waiting a year or so might be appropriate.

iPhone passes BlackBerry in worldwide market share

It's not an earthshaking event, but the occasion should be marked. According to StrategyAnalytics, the iPhone has passed RIM (BlackBerry) as global smartphone shipments reached 77 million units in the 3rd quarter of 2010.

According to the report, the iPhone sold 14.1 million phones, while RIM moved 12.1 million. For RIM, the news gets worse, as the company dropped 16.1 percent in sales from the previous quarter. Nokia is still way out in front with 26.5 million sales, but it also dropped more than 3 percent while the iPhone was up 18.3 percent.

Recently, RIM CEO Jim Balsillie got into a nasty back and forth with Steve Jobs, after Jobs heaped scorn on the upcoming 7" BlackBerry tablet product as 'dead on arrival.' Balsiille responded that people are 'getting tired of being told what to think by Apple.'

The site independently confirmed the following details:

According to Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities, he believes that Apple will launch a 7-inch iPad with Retina Display & 128GB of onboard storage memory next year.

Verizon iPhone 4 Coming Soon, iPhone 5 in Development!

Apple Inc. plans to begin mass producing a new iPhone by the end of 2010 that would allow Verizon Wireless to sell the smartphone early next year, said people briefed by Apple.

The new iPhone would be similar in design to the iPhone 4 currently sold by AT&T Inc. but would be based on an alternative wireless technology called CDMA used by Verizon, these people said. The phone, for which Qualcomm Inc. is providing a key chip, is expected to be released in the first quarter of next year, according to the same people.

An Apple CDMA iPhone would spell the end of the exclusive U.S. arrangement with Apple that AT&T has had since 2007, when the original iPhone debuted.

Separately, Apple is also developing a new iPhone model, said people briefed on the matter. One person familiar with the new iPhone plan said the fifth-generation iPhone will be a different form factor from those that are currently available. It was unclear how soon that version will be available to Verizon.

Spokeswomen for Apple and Qualcomm declined to comment; a spokesman for Verizon Wireless, owned by Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC, declined to comment.

Lots of speculation is going around on the new iPhone 5... in HD!!

Verizon Wireless is currently testing a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 and 5 and Verizon confirms they are making network changes to bring the iphone to their network. The new iPhone 5 is going to be loaded with awesome new features like video chat on 3g and 4g (no longer restricted to WiFi only), face recognition and extreme downloading. (List of possible features below). Just when you think there is nothing else to come up with, more and more and more technology comes out. And it is on the rise, and not just at Apple, Inc!

This iPhone 5 will have dual core processors and higher and powerful graphic chips that can deliver higher video resolutions and better "still" images when taking pictures, AND it will make multi-tasking a breeze.

There are a few networks working on building a 4G network. T-mobile would be a likely carrier since they are GSM already. Sprint has a 4G network already... AT&T and Verizon Wireless are in the beginning stages. There are talks of Verizon Wireless getting iPhone sometime in 2010 but it looks like they will get it for sure in 2011 when the new iPhone 5 comes out.

Whether or not it will be 4G will be up to them!... can they build in time? They will definitely have the 3G version of iPhone, but with the new iPhone 5 (4g speeds) coming out, will they compete?! Regardless, there is much anticipation on how many people will leave AT&T for Verizon Wireless because of AT&T's lagging on app restrictions like Slingplayer and Google Voice and Skype (on 4g network, not Wi-Fi).

AT&T's restrictions have caused the percentage of people that are JailBreaking their iPhones to rise since Jail Breaking usually comes with Cydia which is the app store for jail broken phones. Most of the applications, ringtones, and even iphone themes!...are free with Cydia. Winterboard is part of the download, and it very easily add's the changes to your phone so you dont have to figure how to do it on your own...it is VERY automated.

The Palm Pre on Sprint and HTC EVO (Sprint now offering a 4G network) has made an attempt at being competitive with iPhone and Blackberry...and it seems they are making head way, although with the iPhone 4 released and the iPhone 5 on the way, they are sure to lose. Oh ya, the Blackberry Torch? = Nice try... but that browser is NOT full HTML.

iPhone 5 looks promising in terms of being sleek, packed with new hardware and finally less restrictions. Very exciting.

Ok, pod2g, the well know iPhone hacker behind SHAtter exploit to pwn all devices forever has replied someone who is asking about release date. The answer was cool to everyone!

Chronic Dev Team hacker p0sixninja, one of the hackers who are working on GreenPois0n jailbreak with SHAtter exploit, has tweeted that the tool is not coming out tomorrow or today or any fixed date for now.

This is in response to all those “FAKE” websites who were claiming that the GreenPois0n tool was coming out tonight, tomorrow or this week. There were even people who were taking advantage of all the hype and uploaded viruses disguised as GreenPois0n!

The BlackBerry PlayBook certainly looks like a strong contender against Apple’s iPad, at least amongst RIM’s core enterprise customers. RIM’s dominance of the enterprise smartphone market has begun to come under pressure from Apple and a range of Android competitors, and since the iPad’s launch there has been a lot of discussion about the role of tablet devices in enterprise and the adoption of consumer devices by business users.

The PlayBook is aimed squarely at enterprise users, but RIM has very deliberately included high-end multimedia and gaming capabilities to attract consumers – and of course business users are also consumers.

The PlayBook’s big advantage over the iPad for enterprise customers is that many businesses already have BlackBerry smartphones deployed, and are using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server product to manage their connectivity. Enterprise IT managers understand the security and device management advantages that BlackBerry has over Apple, and RIM will maintain these advantages with the PlayBook, which is fully compatible with existing BlackBerry services.

The danger for RIM is that Apple already has a big head start in the tablet market, and the buzz around its apps and ‘cool factor’ is significant. Many business users will want to bring their own iPads into the work environment, so this is going to be a long and hard fought battle for RIM, but an important one as mobile devices become an increasingly important part of doing business.

Evidence of Two New iPhone Models Found in Apple TV Firmware

Evidence of two new iPhone devices have been found in the just released Apple TV firmware.

The iPhone 4 is referred to as iPhone3,1 by Apple. However, the Apple TV firmware contains references to iPhone3,2 and iPhone 3,3.

These references suggest iPhone 4 devices with minor hardware revisions such as possibly a CDMA version or a device with modifications to the antenna. A major hardware revision would be denoted by iPhone 4,1.

It's also possible that Apple is not planning a major hardware upgrade for next year's iPhone. This would be similar to minor changes made from the iPhone 2G to the iPhone 3G which were respectively denoted as the iPhone1,1 and the iPhone1,2.

There is also an unknown device numbered 20547 that can be seen in the screenshot below.

iPhone Dev-Team Demos SHAtter Jailbreak for iOS 4.1 [Video]

The iPhone Dev-Team has published a video demonstrating the upcoming SHAtter jailbreak for iOS 4.1.

The exploit (and payload) was developed by @pod2g a few months after @p0sixninja of the Chronic Dev Team discovered the crash. That team is hard at work bringing you a brand new tool to make use of the exploit. It’s not the sort of thing that can be developed overnight so please be patient while waiting for any announcements from them.

In the meantime, we’ve put @pod2g’s exploit into a beta version of PwnageTool to test the waters. The SHAtter exploit was enough to convince the iPod touch 4G to restore to our custom IPSW. The successful result is shown below!

Although PwnageTool was a useful first test of a full iPod 4G jailbreak via SHAtter, it’s really overkill compared to the faster tools being developed. Its main use in PwnageTool will be for those with iPhone4’s, to allow updates while preserving the baseband and ultrasn0w carrier unlock. In any event, this is another exciting time for iPhone and iPod touch users…the cat and mouse game continues!

The iPhone 4 launches in China to a HUGE crowd

More than 50,000 Chinese customers pre-ordered the iPhone 4 and huge lines formed in Beijing for the official launch on Friday, September 24th.

The launch of the iPhone 4 in China appears to have attracted more customers than Apple’s release of its previous iPhone in the country. More than 1,000 people lined up outside the Apple retail stores in Beijing & Shanghai, including the new store at Xidan Joy City shopping mall. Some customers waited as long as two days to be first in line to get their hands on one of the phones, but each customer could only purchase two units of iPhone 4.

However, since the purchasing of the iPhone 4 does not require customers to sign a two-year contract, everybody is taking their chance to grab one from the Apple stores. Check out some of the photos below.

White iPhone 4 Launch Soon?

Let the rumors begin! We told you someone forgot to tell Walmart the white iPhone was delayed in June and yet again they’re hinting at an imminent release. Last time was on their website but this time is in one of their AT&T buying sections. As you can see Walmart has a marker on one of their shelves for that elusive white iPhone 4, at a discounted $197 price point.

We are very skeptical about this one, and the source, Pocket Now, does not state which Walmart location this was taken at or any other important information.

Apple unhappy with Maxis for revealing the plans early?

The lull before the iPhone 4 storm.Yesterday was the eve of the official iPhone 4 launch in Malaysia. And boy, was there a ton of juicy stories going around the intersphere. Well, at least iWorld got the official launch date right – Sept 24th, 2010 – as previously “leaked” to us more than a month ago before the Hari Raya break.

Running up to the Friday launch (today), Maxis started out by sending email notifications to those who have registered their interest in the iPhone 4. DiGi followed suit. But that wasn’t the source of the “juicy bits”.

What happened next: Maxis started to put up the Apple iPhone 4 price plans on their website, but they did so BEFORE the official launch date, possibly to pre-empt DiGi and to secure more sign-ups once the iPhone 4 goes nuclear on Friday, the official launch day. Of course, Apple got upset with this and Maxis had to remove the offending details from their website.

Another story goes around like this: DiGi revealed their iDiGi price plans for the iPhone 4 barely a couple of hours before Maxis started selling theirs. Since the iPhone 4 stock is extremely limited at the moment, and DiGi would only be selling theirs AFTER the launch by Maxis, DiGi would not have a choice but to reveal their plans in order to pre-empt folks from signing a contract with Maxis. And because of this fracas, Maxis decided to “hide” their iPhone 4 plans from the folks at DiGi. Sheesh … “kids” these days love to play hide & seek.

Maxis iPhone 4 launched, prepaid available

The iPhone 4 is finally launched by Maxis and people are getting their units as we speak. The queue to the collection area above is insane. A huge difference compared to DiGi’s event.

During the event it was mentioned that the iPhone is available on prepaid and it comes with free 12 months of 500MB data. However we haven’t seen the price for prepaid yet. Even hotlink’s website is inaccessible at time of posting. The other postpaid price remains unchanged.

DiGi iPhone 4 launched

DiGi has launched the iPhone 4 in Malaysia at Quill BMW showroom. Yes, we know it is rare to have a telco event in an automobile showroom. DiGi is first to “launch” in terms of event but their sales only starts at 10AM tomorrow at 45 DiGi outlets nationwide. This makes Maxis, the first to reach its customers at 12:00AM sharp.

Pricing wise, it is the same as the earlier revealed pricing, but they have reduced it to a further RM5/month if you subscribe for auto billing. You can check out their latest plan here.

Let us run through the extra points that we’ve discovered at the launch.

DiGi is throwing a carnival at Quill 9 BMW Showroom, Section 14, Petaling Jaya over this weekend. Exclusively at this event, they are giving an extra RM100 off for trade in of any phone in ANY Condition. So if you have an old brick phone from 5 over years back, this might come in handy. Of course, if you’re looking to trade-in your iPhone 3G/3GS, Maxis would have a better arrangement as posted here.
