App Store Downloads Top Two Billion

Apple today announced that more than two billion apps have been downloaded from its revolutionary App Store, the largest applications store in the world. There are now more than 85,000 apps available to the more than 50 million iPhone and iPod touch customers worldwide and over 125,000 developers in Apple’s iPhone Developer Program.

“The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it.”

Today, iPhone and iPod touch customers in 77 countries worldwide can choose from an incredible range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. With the recently introduced iTunes 9, it’s now easier than ever to organize and sync your apps right in iTunes and they will automatically appear on your iPhone or iPod touch with the same layout.

How to create custom ringtones for iPhone using iTunes for free?

The following steps show how to create free ringtones for your iPhone using only iTunes and songs you already have on your computer.

Note: This method only works with songs that are DRM free. To make iPhone ringtones using DRM protected songs please follow this guide to remove the DRM protection first.

To make iPhone ringtones using only iTunes:

1. Right click on the song you are going to make into a ringer and select "Get Info".

2. Go to the "Options" tab and go down to the "Start Time" and "Stop Time" check boxes. Check both boxes and input the time you want your ringer to start/stop. The ringer has to be 30 seconds or less. Click "OK" when you're done.

3. Right click on your newly "clipped" song and select "Convert Selection to AAC". The song will be re-encoded using the start and stop times determined (If your menu item does not read "Convert Selection to AAC" and reads "Convert Slection to MP3" (or some other format) please go to iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing and change the "Import Using" drop down menu to "AAC Encoder").

make free ringtones for iPhone, create free iPhone ringtones

4. After the song is done encoding navigate to your iTunes Music folder, locate your song, and drag it to your desktop. After the song is on your desktop go back to iTunes and delete the clipped version from you iTunes library (It won't delete it from your desktop, it will only remove it from iTunes).

5. Go back the song on your desktop and right click on your song and chose "Properties". Go to the name and extension section and change the extension from .m4a to .m4r (or you can just change the extension right from your desktop).

6. After the extension is changed simply double click on the file to add it to your iTunes library under the ringtones section. Sync your phone with iTunes and you're done!

Note: Remember to go back into iTunes and uncheck your custom start and stop times for the original version of your song.

Apple Blocks 3GS Downgrades, iTunes 9 is Safe, 3.1GM Vulnerable

Since the release of iTunes 9 and the iPhone OS 3.1 yesterday the Dev Teams have been busy analyzing the software to find changes.

Here is the current status...

- MuscleNerd confirms that it is safe to update to iTunes 9 for those who have already jailbroken/unlocked.

- saurik has noted that Apple has blocked the downgrade to 3.0 for iPhone 3GS users. This means that he can no longer signature hashes for users. Users who have saved their ECID SHSH information will have to wait for someone to build something to use that information. We will post more explaining this in the near future. In the meanwhile you may want to look at this (Windows, Mac) tutorial.

- chronicdev has confirmed that the iPhone 3.1GM is still vulnerable

- the new firmware does include a baseband upgrade which will cause you to lose your unlock unless you are on the iPhone 2G or have an iPhone 3G with the 5.8 bootloader. If you do have the 5.8 bootloader please note that no tools are available to perform the baseband downgrade yet.

- it is NOT okay to update to 3.1 if you are jailbroken or might want to jailbreak in the near future. WAIT!

iTunes 9 Home Sharing and iPhone app management

Sure, sure, the kids are all excited about iTunes LP and their fancy "lyrics" and "album art." You know what we're psyched about? Finally being able to manage our iPhone apps directly from iTunes 9. It works pretty much exactly as you'd expect, although we were able to make it do some minorly wonky things -- and we're psyched about the AutoFill-esque music sync feature that fills any remaining space on your phone with music.

We're also pumped about the new Home Sharing feature in iTunes 9, which lets you transfer content between five different machines directly without screwing around with network shares or USB drives. We've seriously been waiting for a feature like this since iTunes sharing was first launched -- it also works exactly like you'd expect, and we think it'll make managing media across multiple machines much, much easier.

Apple has released iPhone OS 3.1 which includes a number of new features; however, its important to remember NOT to update your firmware. Choose from thousands of iPhone ringtones on the iTunes Store and buy them with a tap.

Use iTunes on your computer to drag apps onto virtual Home screens, then sync them to your iPhone.
